The relationship between fibre number and total length (TL) was fitted with a Gompertz model enabling FFN (the asymptote; means ± s.e.m.) and the TL at which FFN was reached to be calculated (model). These values were compared with estimates based on the longest fish containing no fast muscle fibres less than 10 μm diameter (observation)
