These nmol N g-1 h-1 values were calculated on the following basis: 24-h immersion of 30-g rainbow trout in 1500 ml holding water.

TMA (trimethylamine), TMAO (trimethylamine oxide) and uric acid detection limits were calculated on samples that were concentrated 41.67 times. Nitrate+ nitrite detection limits (minimum increase detectable above background) were high due to high background levels (3.6 μmol l-1).
