Cover: Swimming fishes often contend with unsteady flows, such as these wild brook trout in Montana, USA. Our mechanistic understanding of this ability is limited because current kinematic models developed for steady swimming cannot account for locomotion in more complex environments. As a step forward, Akanyeti and Liao (pp. 4666−4677) present the first analytical model that accurately predicts the midline kinematics of rainbow trout swimming in vortex streets. Their work initiates a quantitative understanding of how fish interact with unsteady flows in real time. In addition, their model provides a mathematical definition for roboticists who seek to evaluate the performance of bio-inspired designs.
