These displays probably involve motion cues, contrast against backgrounds, and color cues on the claw and possibly also other body parts. The visual pigments and associated screening pigments in main photoreceptors of four species of fiddler crabs (males pictured here) have now been described, permitting quantitative studies of the visual worlds of fiddlers (see article by J. Mexican fruit flies wave for distraction
Dinesh Rao and colleagues have discovered that Mexican fruit flies vanish in a blur in the eyes of predatory spiders when they wave their wings at the arachnids, buying the flies time to make their escape.
