Equity, diversity and inclusion in research
This collection brings together a curated list of ‘perspective’-type articles from across The Company of Biologists’ journals, highlighting the Company’s commitment to improving equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in all our activities.
These articles discuss how research can be made more accessible and inclusive for biology researchers from all backgrounds, and emphasise how considering gender and genetic diversity in research practices can achieve results that apply to broader populations. Together, the articles in this collection demonstrate how the diversity of our global society can be better represented in the lab and in our communities.

Using the reactive scope model to redefine social stress in fishes
In their Review, Katie Gilmour and colleagues redefine the ambiguous concept of social stress by using the reactive scope model as a framework to explain the divergent physiological phenotypes of dominant and subordinate fishes.

Brynne Duffy and colleagues reveal that thirteen-lined ground squirrels are true hypoxia champions surviving extreme low blood oxygen, down to just 34% oxygen, when they emerge briefly from hibernation.
