In the printed version of this paper, the concentration of the artificial intestinal saline was given incorrectly in the Materials and methods. The correct composition of this saline is (in mmol l^–1): Na⁺, 50; K⁺, 5; Mg²⁺, 100; Ca²⁺, 5; Cl^–, 109; SO₄^2–, 77.5; HCO₃^–, 1; pH 7.8–8.0.

The composition of artificial plasma saline was correct.

The last sentence of the first paragraph of the Materials and methods section should thus read:
