ABSTRACT
The influence of water, as distinct from humidity, on insect behaviour has not been widely investigated, but with regard to the special problem of wireworm distribution, soil moisture has been recognized as an environmental factor of considerable importance (Thomas, 1940).

The use of baited papers for testing the gustatory responses of wireworms originated with Dr W. H. Thorpe of this Department. In selecting wheat grains as suitable food for quantitative estimations, I have followed the unpublished results of Mr D. S. Falconer.
