ABSTRACT
Nereis diversicolor (Müller) is a euryhaline polychaete. In brackish water it is able to “regulate” the water exchange between body fluid and environment. The related stenohaline species Perinereis (Nereis) cultrifera (Grube) has no such powers of regulating its water exchange, which differs from that of Nereis diversicolor in two respects: (1) in. brackish water of a given osmotic pressure the initial water intake is much larger than that of N. diversicolor, relative to the body weight; (2) there is no subsequent water loss (Beadle, 1931).
