The CO2 binding powers of frog’s blood (Wastl and Seliskar, 1925), muscle (Fenn, 1928; Stella, 1929) and nerve (Fenn, 1928) have been investigated by equilibrating the substance under examination with known partial pressures of CO2 and determining the amounts (of CO2) which were chemically combined. Hence, from the CO2 dissociation curve, the pH inside the tissue was calculated by means of the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation; also, from the slope of the curve showing the connection between the partial pressure of CO2 and the pH, the variation of the buffering power of the tissue, as defined by Van Slyke (1922), with pH could be calculated.
