Paramecia have been cultured in 5% iron-dextran solution for several days, but under the present experimental conditions do not appear to synthesize the iron-storage protein ferritin.

High resolution electron micrographs were obtained of the outer ‘pellicular’ and inner ‘peribasal’ membranes of the cortical layer in Paramecium auretia; both membranes proved to be triple-layered unit membranes, each having two osmiophilic layers 2 to 3 mµ thick separated by a space of 3 mµ The outer membrane of the cilium has the same structure as, and is continuous with, the pellicular membrane. This fact is thought to be of significance with regard to antigen studies.
