Rights and permissions

For further information on our Open Access policies, fees, waivers and Read & Publish agreements, please visit our Open Access page.

General policy

Disease Models & Mechanisms (DMM) is a fully Open Access journal.

All articles are published under the CC-BY licence.

Under the terms of this licence, anyone may reuse, distribute or reproduce the article (or parts of the article) in any medium, including for commercial purposes, without requiring permission from the publisher or author, provided that the original work is properly attributed.

Attribution should take the form of citing the article, including the doi, and linking to the published article on the DMM web site. This applies to any version, including the final published PDF, but only after publication of the final version of record of the article.

DMM applies a single licence agreement to all its articles. Visit our licence page for further details and to see an example licence.

Archiving, deposition and reuse

Preprint servers

DMM allows the posting of primary research papers on preprint servers.

Self-archiving

As an author service, the final version of record of all DMM articles is deposited in US/NLM PMC.

Authors may reuse their article in other material, post it on their web site, include the article in their thesis, and deposit it in institutional (including PMC Europe), subject, funder and thesis repositories.

Authors may use any version, including the final published PDF, but only after publication of the final version of record of the article. The source must be attributed (e.g. by citing the doi and linking to the published article on the DMM web site).

No permission is required from the publisher.

Use by parties other than the authors

Under the terms of the CC-BY licence, articles (or parts of articles) may be used for teaching purposes, in third-party article collections and for commercial use, as long as the source is attributed. Responsible text and data mining is also permitted.

Any version may be used, including the final published PDF, but only after publication of the final version of record of the article. The source must be attributed (e.g. by citing the doi and linking to the published article on the DMM web site).

No permission is required from the publisher.

Data mining

Article full text, metadata and citations may be crawled without special permission or registration, on the condition that it is non-commercial. We ask that, where you reuse content, you attribute the original source, e.g. by citing doi and linking to the published article on the journal website, and that you respect the copyright of the original articles.

Please bear in mind that, should usage exceed 200 requests in 3 minutes from a single IP, users will need to complete a Captcha. If you have any other technical queries, please email [email protected].

For commercial TDM requests, our content is available through RightFind XML for Mining, from Copyright Clearance Centre.

Permission to use material from other publications in DMM

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain permission to use material (e.g. figures) from other publications in any article submitted to DMM and to ensure that any such use is credited to the source (e.g. by including a complete citation/reference for the original article in the figure legend). Written permission from the copyright holder (which might be the author or the publisher of the original material, or another) should be provided to the Editorial Office at the time of submission, otherwise publication might be delayed.

If you have modified a figure from a previously published figure, please check with the copyright holder to see whether modification is permitted under the original licence and whether permission is required, and include a complete citation/reference for the original article.

Note that any figures reproduced from other publications are covered by the licence associated with the original publication. In such cases, where a different licence (not CC-BY) is applied to a specific element within an article, this will be noted in the article where relevant.

If you are reproducing images from a non-Open Access licence source, please state so as follows: “This image is not published under the terms of the CC-BY licence of this article. For permission to reuse, please see [Author et al., 2016]”.

Please contact the original publisher if you have any question about their licence terms, noting that all DMM articles are published under the CC-BY licence. Even if you are also the author of the original work, it cannot be assumed that you have the right to reuse the material in DMM without permission.

Please do not use any material in a DMM article that you do not have written permission to reuse or adapt, and always attribute the original source.

Authors of invited review-type articles should discuss potential permissions issues with the inviting Editor.
