Combination therapy is thought to be a promising approach to minimise cancer relapse, re-growth and drug resistance. Identifying optimal treatment combinations is, however, a challenging task. Gladstone et al. report that Bouvardin, a compound previously identified in a Drosophila screen as an inhibitor of protein translation, enhances the effects of radiation and the anti-cancer agent taxol in several preclinical models. There are few cancer drugs that specifically target protein translation, but these findings suggest that such agents should be added to the anti-cancer arsenal. Page 342
