The neural folds of the Axolotl neurula transplanted homoplastically from the branchial region to the trunk give rise to cartilage in only a small proportion of cases, even where the grafts are allowed to live for very considerable periods. It is concluded that the determination of the skeletogenous component of the neural crest of the young neurula has proceeded some way, but that its cells are not yet rigidly bound to their presumptive fate.
