The 1160 pages of text that make up the two volumes of the 4th edition of ‘Molecular Biology of the Gene’ represent a multiauthor complete rewrite of the earlier editions by James Watson. This new undertaking is a bold and largely successful effort to update the 3rd edition and to extend the coverage to include in Volume II illustrations of how the molecular biological revolution of the last fifteen years has contributed to a detailed molecular and cellular understanding of specific biological processes. Despite the contribution of five authors, the style of presentation is remarkably uniform. The illustrations are generally excellent, though some of the micrographic reproductions in my copy of the book are of rather poor quality. The contents, index and bibliography are all excellent. The bibliography provides an invaluable guide to further reading.
