This volume is the “book of the conference”, the conference being the NATO advanced workshop held in Edinburgh, July 15th-19th, 1985, so by the time this review is published three years will have elapsed since the meeting Nevertheless, that meeting was more or less a complete gathering of the field (so much so that it was necessary to recruit a complete outsider to write this review) and it is therefore a very valuable marker of the state of play at that time, just before (we hope) the logarithmic expansion in our knowledge.
