Cranial base anatomy at E17.5 in wild-type (upper panel/right panel) and Gas1+/−; Cdon−/− compound mutant (lower panel/left panel) mouse skulls. In the mutant, there is only a single median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) present within the premaxilla, but the secondary palate is intact. Images were differentially stained for bone (alizarin red) and cartilage (alcian blue), cleared in glycerine and photographed in light field. See the article by Seppala et al.
