Fluorescent reporters of transcription for the abu/pqn paralog group (APPG) genes abu-5 (red) and abu-11 (green). Both genes are expressed in the C. elegans pharynx, an organ lined by cuticle that is required for maceration and transport of bacteria (the animal’s food) to the intestine. While composed partly of chitin, protein components of the pharyngeal cuticle had been unknown. George-Raizen et al. show that APPG genes are expressed during pharyngeal cuticle synthesis periods, that APPG proteins localize to the pharyngeal cuticle and are shed during molts, and that some of these APPG genes are required for the function of the pharyngeal cuticle. A new model for cephalopod neurobiology
Fabián Vergara-Ovalle and colleagues show the distribution of the nitric oxide system within the nervous system, particularly in areas associated with olfactory and visual information processing, in Octopus maya. Since these octopi can be cultured in the lab, they represent a valuable model for studying cephalopod neurobiology.
