Section of an embryonic mouse submandibular salivary gland immunostained by MxIF, showing DAPI (dark blue), Aqp5 (white), SMA (red), K5 (pink), c-kit (green), PDGFR (yellow) and βIII tubulin (cyan). Simultaneous mapping of these markers highlights the widespread expansion of the epithelial progenitor marker K5 in the ducts, SMA in the developing myoepithelial cells surrounding the Aqp5-positive secretory acinar cells, and c-kit that is widespread in the acinar compartment and partitioning into the ducts at this stage of development. Note also the close association of the PDGFR-positive stromal mesenchymal cells and the βIII-tubulin-positive neurons surrounding the epithelium, and the SMA-positive smooth muscle cells surrounding the larger vessels. See the article by Nelson et al. (doi:10.1242/bio.20134309).
