Representative image of karyotyping of a mouse meiosis I oocyte from a paper by Hino and Kusakabe. Note that the mouse oocyte comprises 19 autosomes and an X chromosome (sex chromosome). All autosomes were arranged by number on the idiogram, with the sex chromosome placed last. Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.

Effects of temperature on metabolic rate during metamorphosis in the alfalfa leafcutting bee
Summary: Ectotherms can experience a wide range of optimal to lethal temperatures due to environmental variation. Megachile rotundata is a solitary bee that is immobile during spring development and must endure changes in temperature. Thermal performance curves were generated for developing Megachile rotundata pupae using a new respirometry system.
The threat of a non-native oligochaete species in Iran's freshwater: assessment of the diversity and origin of Eiseniella tetraedra (Savigny, 1826) and its response to climate change
Summary: A non-native dominant oligochaete species is a silent threat to the freshwater ecosystems of Iran.
Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha protein increases without changes in mRNA during acute hypoxic exposure of the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis
Summary: Parallel measurements of hypoxia inducible factor protein and mRNA support post-translational protein stabilization rather than new transcription in the initial response of fish to low oxygen.
Coilin mediates m6A RNA methylation through phosphorylation of METTL3
Summary: Our work highlights a novel role for the Cajal body marker protein, coilin, in m6A RNA methylation by which it influences the expression of METTL3 and participates in microRNA biogenesis.
METHODS & TECHNIQUES
What is complex allometry?
Summary: Complex bivariate allometry in logarithmic domain is caused by a requirement for an explicit intercept in the power equation describing untransformed observations.
A reliable technique for karyotyping mouse oocytes prepared by a gradual fixation/air-drying method followed by multicolour FISH
Summary: Mouse oocytes can be karyotyped efficiently and reliably by applying multicolour FISH to chromosome slides prepared by a gradual fixation/air-drying method best suited to avoid the artificial loss of chromosomes.

Nicotine enhances the lethal effect of a parasitic fungus in ants

Jason Rissanen and Dalial Freitak show that nicotine pollution in the environment could have a big impact on the health of ants, as it makes diseases more deadly for them.
Event carbon calculator

Our not-for-profit publisher, The Company of Biologists, has designed the event carbon calculator to support the creation of sustainable events. The tool is still in its beta stage. Please test it and let us know if you have any feedback.
