MEETING REVIEWS

Summary: This Meeting Review describes the African conference and workshop on CRISPR technology and highlights the main outcomes of both the conferences and the practical sessions. The symposium was a real success, helping to educate, train and network international and young scientists in the field of gene editing and gene engineering.

Summary: The British Association of Cancer Research Early Career Conference, Trailblazers in Cancer Research, brought together researchers from across the UK and beyond to share their outstanding contributions to cancer research.

REVIEWS

A YEAR AT THE FOREFRONT

Summary: This Review provides a short overview of recent discoveries, innovations, community resources and hypotheses in the field of plasmodesmata biology. It mostly focuses on research published between May 2022 and May 2023.

FUTURE LEADER REVIEW

Summary: Until recently, the nervous system boundaries were thought to be permeable only to axons. This review highlights recent work that illustrates glial cell transgression of nervous system transition zones.

RESEARCH ARTICLES

Summary: In ectotherm body color serves diverse functions, including thermoregulation. Using a new color data extraction method, we found that in the gecko Eublepharis macularius melanistic coloration is unrelated to temperature regulation.

Summary: During cell migration, the presence of Connexin 43 reduces the need of Golgi's reorientation to attain directionality.

Summary: The metabolic status of Schizosaccharomyces pombe cells dictates the regulation of cell division decisions and the influence of the MAPK pathway on mitotic timing.

Summary: A FLO9 allele promotes self-assembly of GFP-tagged aldehyde dehydrogenase (Ald4p), suggesting a novel role in regulating the polymerization of Ald4p.

Summary: A yeast mutant completes both rounds of meiotic rDNA segregation during the Meiosis II phase.

Summary: We assessed how visual perception of white-tailed deer influences movement decisions. Our findings suggest visual perception relative to light environments represents an underappreciated driver of decision-making by ungulate prey species.

Summary: High-fat diet and continuous light affected physiological and behavioral adaptions that occur in females to meet the metabolic and developmental needs of offspring during pregnancy and lactation.

Summary: This study reveals the role of HNRNPU in delaying neural progenitor differentiation in hindbrain-profile neural cells. The deficiency of HNRNPU, linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, impacted chromatin structure, transcriptional rewiring, and exon usage during mRNA processing, particularly enriching genes associated with epilepsy, intellectual disability, and autism.

METHODS & TECHNIQUES

Summary: We present vector concepts that use four phenotypically clearly distinguishable markers to provide full visual control over two independent transgenes, allowing genotyping of double transgenic organisms in less than 15 seconds.

Summary: We provide an open-access spatial transcriptomics atlas of the embryonic mouse brain. This spatial map enables the exploration and discovery of gene functions within the tissue context.

Summary: In this article we provide a step-by-step guide for leveraging FRET-based metabolic sensors in complex tissues or organs. The method encompasses guidelines for experimental design, microscopy, and image processing.
