Ectopic sources of fibroblast growth-factor-10 (FGF-10) elicit the formation of multiple supernumerary buds within the airway epithelium of cultured embryonic lungs. These supernumerary buds show elevated levels of proliferation (green) within the airway epithelial cells (red) of incipient buds. In this issue, Kara E. Peak and colleagues show that FGF-10-induced buckling morphogenesis can drive the emergence of supernumerary buds. Image licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.

RESEARCH ARTICLES
Development of a cypovirus protein microcrystal-encapsulated Bacillus thuringiensis UV-tolerant and mosquitocidal δ-endotoxin
Summary:Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis delta-endotoxin activity domain-encapsulated polyhedra could be a proteinaceous pesticide applicable for mosquito control under outdoor conditions.
Focal sources of FGF-10 promote the buckling morphogenesis of the embryonic airway epithelium
Summary: In this paper, we show that ectopic sources of FGF-10 induce epithelial buckling and initiate the formation of new branches in cultured embryonic lungs.
Autism-associated CHD8 keeps proliferation of human neural progenitors in check by lengthening the G1 phase of the cell cycle
Summary: Neuronal precursor cells with genetic deletion of one copy of autism-associated CHD8 show marked decrease in duration of the G1 phase of the cell cycle.
Drosophila CRISPR/Cas9 mutants as tools to analyse cardiac filamin function and pathogenicity of human FLNC variants
Summary: CRISPR mutants of Drosophila filamin, shown here to be required for adult cardiac function and sarcomeric integrity, revealed that the C-term region is dispensable and opens ways to study human variants.
Hepatic leukemia factor-expressing paraxial mesoderm cells contribute to the developing brain vasculature
Summary: Genetic lineage tracing reveals that a transient expression of hepatic leukemia factor (Hlf) marks angiogenic cephalic paraxial mesenchyme, which mainly contributes to the developing brain vasculature.
The uncoating of EV71 in mature late endosomes requires CD-M6PR
Summary: In human rhabdomyosarcoma cells, EV71 uncoating takes place in mature late endosomes and relies on CD-M6PR.
HepT1-derived murine models of high-risk hepatoblastoma display vascular invasion, metastasis, and circulating tumor cells
Summary: In this work, we developed and thoroughly characterized several unique models of hepatoblastoma derived from the HepT1 cell line that show high-risk features.
Suction feeding of West African lungfish (Protopterus annectens): An XROMM analysis of jaw mechanics, cranial kinesis, and hyoid mobility
Summary: Three-dimensional hyoid movements and clavicle retraction generate suction during the relatively slow, but successful, feeding strikes of the West African lungfish (Protopterus annectens).
METHODS & TECHNIQUES
Reproducible propagation technique for the symbiotic cnidarian model system Cassiopea xamachana
Summary: This manuscript outlines a dissection protocol to propagate the upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea xamachana.
The temporal dynamics of the sea urchin regulome
Summary: This study uses Nanostring N-counter technology to evaluate the mRNA expression level of more than 330 regulatory genes over 34 time points covering the first three days of development of the sea urchin larvae.

A novel role for glycogen synthase during heat stress

Pratibha Bhadauriya, Akanksha Onkar and colleagues highlight a novel role for glycogen synthase (GS) in regulating autophagy during heat stress via heat shock factor 1 in neuronal cells. Moreover, they show that GS-mediated glycogen metabolism is not only a reservoir of energy but an active molecular player in heat stress responses.
