Zebrafish models of alx-linked frontonasal dysplasia reveal a role for Alx1 and Alx3 in the anterior segment and vasculature of the developing eye
Summary: We show that zebrafish alx1 and alx3 function redundantly to regulate ocular and facial development, and identify a novel protective function of alx1 against ethanol toxicity.
Antimicrobial peptide expression in the cockroach gut during enterobacterial infection is specific and influenced by type III secretion
Summary: This study demonstrates that antimicrobial peptide gene expression in the German cockroach gut can be highly specific, responding to type III secretion-dependent colonization processes rather than to general bacterial associated molecular patterns. This finding provides new insight into the immunological adaptation of cockroaches to life in septic environments as well as the factors that regulate bacterial pathogen transmission by these insects.

Summary: Ventral patterning is controlled in part by the T-box Transcription factor midline blocking Dpp signaling and Dpp-activated genes, though midline does not affect the Dpp-repressed gene brk.

Summary: The development of anti-vitellogenin antibodies of Palinurus elephas could be applied to building a non-invasive reading system for monitoring the reproductive status of these crustaceans and as a useful tool for controlling the quality of their aquatic environment.

The power of planaria
In their Research Article, Orel Benita and colleagues obtain the first recording of well-defined extracellular multiunit activity from the freshwater planarian brain by a straight-forward technique. These traits combined with their exceptional regeneration capabilities, allow for neurobiological experiments not possible in any other model organism such as an electrophysiological recording from planaria with two heads that control a shared body.
