RESEARCH ARTICLES

Summary: We show that zebrafish alx1 and alx3 function redundantly to regulate ocular and facial development, and identify a novel protective function of alx1 against ethanol toxicity.

Summary: This study demonstrates that antimicrobial peptide gene expression in the German cockroach gut can be highly specific, responding to type III secretion-dependent colonization processes rather than to general bacterial associated molecular patterns. This finding provides new insight into the immunological adaptation of cockroaches to life in septic environments as well as the factors that regulate bacterial pathogen transmission by these insects.

Summary: Ventral patterning is controlled in part by the T-box Transcription factor midline blocking Dpp signaling and Dpp-activated genes, though midline does not affect the Dpp-repressed gene brk.

METHODS & TECHNIQUES

Summary: We describe a reporter to study the dynamics of ERK signalling in Drosophila, use it to measure signalling in individual cells over time, and monitor development.

Summary: We created a dashboard to visualize gene expression in the Drosophila germarium and discovered that meiotic entry is regulated at the level of translation.

Summary: The development of anti-vitellogenin antibodies of Palinurus elephas could be applied to building a non-invasive reading system for monitoring the reproductive status of these crustaceans and as a useful tool for controlling the quality of their aquatic environment.
