Sumimoto and colleagues (doi: 10.1242/bio.20121370) show that Fhod3, a member of the formin family of proteins for actin assembly, plays an essential role in heart formation by organizing myofibrillogenesis. Fhod3 is expressed in the developing heart as indicated by lacZ staining of heterozygous Fhod3+/– mouse embryos (row 2), which develop similarly to the wild-type ones (row 1). By contrast, Fhod3–/– embryos are dead at mid-gestation with massive pericardial effusion (row 3).
