Overexpression of Lhx1 (magenta) in the outer layer of the optic vesicle results in formation of the second neural retina in the chick embryo. An EGFP expression plasmid (green) was co-electroporated with the Lhx1 expression vector. The upper epithelium was supposed to be a single layer of the pigmented epithelium, but partly transformed to the second pseudostratified neural retina, whereas the lower epithelium is the authentic neural retina. Nuclei were stained with DAPI. See the article by Kawaue et al. (doi: 10.1242/bio.20121396)
