Salamanders are the only vertebrates capable of limb regeneration as adults. This image shows a time series of limb regeneration in the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). Regeneration progresses in a clockwise direction, with an un-amputated forelimb shown at the 3 o’clock position. The image within the circle depicts gene expression from an axolotl-specific microarray. Using these arrays, Monaghan et al. (doi: 10.1242/bio.20121594) have discovered nerve-dependent genes necessary to direct a limb regeneration program.

A new model for cephalopod neurobiology
Fabián Vergara-Ovalle and colleagues show the distribution of the nitric oxide system within the nervous system, particularly in areas associated with olfactory and visual information processing, in Octopus maya. Since these octopi can be cultured in the lab, they represent a valuable model for studying cephalopod neurobiology.
